Programming shows at The Bushnell - how does it work?

Thank you all so very much for taking advantage of the opportunity to talk to us through our new Bushnell Blog. We read, discuss and otherwise consider your postings everyday in hopes of doing an even better job bringing you the best the industry can offer. We will be announcing the 08-09 Broadway Series[very soon and will eagerly await your reactions!

The topic of repeat titles is very timely. Clearly, some folks love ‘em; some folks are less keen. Historically, The Bushnell (and colleague theatres) has been limited in their choices to the titles Broadway producers put on the road. Recently, however, The Bushnell has taken a very proactive role in changing that paradigm. The results of these efforts – brand NEW shows - are making their way to stages in New York and Chicago this season. If things go as planned, we will start to see these shows hit Broadway in the 08-09, 09-10 seasons, and therefore play The Bushnell shortly thereafter. For more details I would encourage you to read our president’s message in our annual report here (scroll to the bottom to download the PDF).

For you lovers of the classics, fear not. We will continue to strive for a healthy balance between the new and the time-honored.

For you lovers of the latest and greatest, fear not. We will also stay committed to representing your taste and interests “at the table.”

See you at The Drowsy Chaperone in February!

Scott Galbraith, VP Programming

We just came home from the Friday night showing of African Footprint. A delightful change from Broadway-esque musicals.

I'll take you up on your offer for suggestions for shows. I would really enjoy seeing a similar show that showcases the music of Aboriginal Australia and a performance by the Kodo drummers.

Al Gloer:

One thing I forgot,

You asked during your introduction to support the show by considering a souvenir. I would have gladly done so, except it was cash only and there was not an ATM to be found. Perhaps making the show souvenirs available online would not e a bad idea.

C. A. Butler:

What a way to spend a Friday evening! In so many words, The African Footprint production was nothing and I do mean nothing short of a total awe inspired burst of electrified energy accompanied by action packed (and booming) sound, slick stagings and footwork that left my heart thumping wildly.
Actually, when I learned about the production, by word of mouth I was expecting an evening of the South African traditional "gum boot" dancing, which in and of itself would have been worth the ticket. But the total evening's fare, with folkloric instruments, dance, song, connections with African American and other New World folk traditions was a treat to behold-- A joy indeed.
On the other hand, at times the production was so (too?) slick that I had a hard time remembering that it was a company out of "the dusty streets of Soweto" South Africa.
Lastly, I must give special thanks for the visionary foresight of Gwen Iloani for her persistence in making this unique show available to Hartford.

Faithlyn Johnson:

I am out raged at your Companies false advertisements. I went to your new show African Footprints which thought was excellent beyond belief I invited my whole family to it and I think contributed at least 300 dollars to the Bushnell. Before this performance we were given a pamphlet titled "The Producers" which we could look through before the show. To my amusement there was a section in the pamphlet about African Footprints that helped answer a couple questions and said, "January 25-26, 2008". I thought this was very convenient because after I saw the show that Friday night other people I knew would like to see this fabulous play. So when I invited my neighbor and many family friends to go to this performance I was appalled when they told me they went down to the box office and there was no one there. I am outraged at you false advertisements and I and shocked and surprised how bad you made many people look. I demand an apology. We have gone and put thousands of dollars into the Bushnell all our lives so when my family and I experience such a betrayal and embarrassment we wanted to bring it to your attention and wanted some reassurance that this wouldn't happen again.

Amanda Guay:

Faithlyn -

Thank you for your comment. We originally planned to have two performances of African Footprint when the Prompter playbill went to print. Unfortunately, one of the performances was canceled after the printing. Communicating such cancellations is always difficult and we of course apologize for any inconvenience. We always encourage our guests to call and or check our website and will continue to pursue other methods of relaying such information. Thank you for your support of The Bushnell. We sincerely appreciate your input.

Karen Lanza:

When will next years Broadway line up be advertised? I have been a subscriber for 12 years and it keeps getting later and later.

Thank you.

Amanda Guay:

Hi Karen. Thanks for your enthusiasm regarding our 08-09 Broadway season. We guarantee the wait will be worth it. Long story short, we have to receive official approval from each individual show prior to announcing our season. For that to occur, a ton of paperwork must trade hands. Ordinarily that's not particularly complicated but the blockbusters each have very specific national deadlines that they're aiming towards which don't always align with our deadlines. That said, we're hoping to make our HUGE 08-09 plans a matter of public record shortly. Thanks for hanging in there!
